Here is an update from the US of A. My journey to get to this side was 29hrs from door to door. Thanks to Mr Flee and his trusty bakkie “wit blitz” I made it to the airport with time to spare and had a quick beer before the journey began.

So far things been going well and I played my first show last night at the Sidewalk Cafe in East Village. Was very cool and casual and the response was cool and sold some discs and made some friends.

The day began with a long frisbee session in Central Park. I was worried I might get Frisbee arm and not be able to play, but that was just paranoid talk!

This is a bit of a late report, but I have been busy! Bloemfontien was hot, Port Elizabeth was hot, East London was hot and finally Grahamstown was damn hot. I think it must have been between 30 – 35 degrees everyday, as Bill & myself tripped around the eastern cape. All I can say is that I am glad we got the car with the aircon.

Ok enough about the weather, what about the shows? They were cool. People came out and they felt good. In Port Elizabeth maybe I was a bit tired from the long drive and when that youngster from the bar shouted “show us your tits”, well I just laughed, when really I should have had a comeback. The lesson was learnt and when a tit-deprived youngin’ shouts at me again I will be ready.

The best part was that I learnt alot. Doing 60+ min solo shows requires stamina, amongst other things. The solo game, is a new game for me, but I can say that I am learning and the shows keep getting better. Looking forward to the next one and look forward to returning to that part of the world. Met awesome people and the weather is f.i.n.e.

Chat soon,

It may sound like make believe, but there was once a time when popular music was not strictly all about love, sex, break-ups, good times, getting down in ‘the club’ and baby, baby, baby. Seriously, not that long ago musicians would write songs about almost anything that interested them. They sang truth to power. They voiced the outrage of their generation. They stuck it to the man. There was folk music, freedom music, fighting tunes. Music was conscious. Musicians wrote songs about murder, religion, war, poverty and most importantly they tackled the major social issues of the times. But now we’re stuck on the baby-baby loop. And it makes us sick.

We at Mahala have not forgotten that once upon a time music was a weapon. That’s why in collaboration with Rambling Jay Bones we’ll be producing a series of fresh, new, totally unhinged musical masterpieces every month. Music that tackles the ugly themes of the underbelly. Corruption, greed, dishonesty, road rage, felching. For you, to download here, for mahala! Go to http://www.mahala.co.za/culture/citizen-bones/
